Why Didn’t Jesus Choose Women Among the 12 Disciples?
This is a question I’ve been asked many times, and the answers can be amusing. Some people say, “It’s because women take too long to get ready, and Jesus didn’t have time for that!” (lol). Others claim it was because, back then, women were insignificant, and still, there are even more absurd theories I won’t waste time on.
Honestly, none of these reasons hold any truth. Most of those who give such answers are only trying to highlight the weak side of women, and today, I’m here to dispel that notion.
Our King Jesus had immense regard for women. He respected them deeply, showed compassion towards them, and as we read through the scriptures, we see women playing critical roles in the ministry of Christ. So, if you’ve ever been made to feel like women had no place in the narrative of the Gospel, let me remind you that the truth couldn’t be further from that.
Today, my assignment is to highlight the incredible women who stood by Jesus throughout His journey. From the temple to the tomb, these women played significant roles in His ministry. They often worked behind the scenes but left a lasting impact that shaped the story of salvation in profound ways, ways that even the disciples couldn’t match, oops!
Let’s start with Anna, the prophetess, who spent her life in the temple fasting and praying. When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus as a baby to the temple, it was Anna who recognized Him as the Messiah and shared this good news with those around her (Luke 2:36-38). Her role may seem quiet, but it was key—she prepared the way in prayer for what was to come. This shows us that even if your role is not on the frontlines, it is significant in God’s plan.
Moving forward, we have Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, and others who traveled with Jesus and supported His ministry financially (Luke 8:1-3). They weren’t preaching or performing miracles, but they played an indispensable part by providing for Jesus and His disciples. Without their support, the ministry would have faced greater difficulties. These women show us that our contributions, whether small or large, are necessary for the growth of God’s Kingdom.
When we think about the final moments of Jesus’ life, the women at the cross stand out. While many of the disciples scattered, it was Mary, the mother of Jesus, along with Mary Magdalene and others, who stayed with Him during His crucifixion (John 19:25). These women showed an unwavering commitment to stand by Him when the situation was darkest. What an incredible testimony of loyalty!
And after His death, who was first to the tomb? The women! You guessed that right! They came to anoint His body, and it was to Mary Magdalene that Jesus first revealed Himself after His resurrection (John 20:16). Jesus entrusted the message of His resurrection to a woman. Can you see how powerful this is? They were the first witnesses to the greatest miracle of all time.
The significance of these women reminds us of a few things:
- Your role is key—even if it doesn’t look big, be faithful.
- Surround yourself with people who support your journey—these women came together to better Jesus’ ministry, each playing their part.
- God sees your faithfulness—whether you’re in the spotlight or behind the scenes, you matter to God’s plan.
Even though Jesus didn’t have female disciples, these women did things that even His disciples didn’t. They ministered in ways that were essential and powerful, showing us that God can use us in unique ways, no matter where we are.
Ladies, take this to heart today. You may not always see the impact of your work, but trust that God does. Be faithful in your assignment, however small it seems, because it is key to God’s bigger picture.
Blessings!
Your fellow lady.
